World Champion Makes Trip To Vegas Count, Nash Takes Her Third CrossVegas Title

With they cyclocross season just underway, many European riders made the trip to Las Vegas to start their season at the Clif Bar CrossVegas 2013 events. At the top of everyone’s list was the current men’s world champion, Sven Nys (Crelan-Euphony), who was making only his second American appearance after clinching his title in Louisville this past February. A contingent of Belgian riders were ready to mix things up with the domestics in the Men’s race, while Katerina Nash (Luna), Gabby Day-Durrin (Rapha-Focus), and Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement) looked to challenge in the Women’s event. The American riders weren’t about to roll over and let the Euro’s have their way though, as men’s national champion Jonathan Page (Fuji-Spy-Competitive Cyclist), men’s returning champion Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus) Ryan Trebon (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com), Georgia Gould (Luna), Lea Davison (Specialized), and Meredith Miller (Cal Giant-Specialized) stepped up to the line.

Women’s Elite Race Presented by Lazer

From the gun, it was Caroline Mani (Raleigh-Clement) who took the holeshot. Lea Davison (Specialized) moved to the front during the short lap, winning the Camarena Tequila Whole Shot Award as she crossed the line first on the short lap. Mani and Davison were joined by Katerina Nash, Georgia Gould, and Catherine Pendrel (Luna), Gabby Day-Durrin (Rapha-Focus), Elle Anderson and Meredith Miller (Cal Giant-Specialized), Amy Dombroski (Telenet-Fidea), Chloe Woodruff (Crankbrothers Race Club), Mical Dyck (NoTubes), Nicole Duke (Duke-Spy) and Jessica Cutler (Bikesport NW-Jamis) as they started their first loop of the long course.

The second and third laps saw many of the riders of the lead group take turns on the front, with attacks by Davison, Anderson, and Day-Durrin, but it wasn’t until Nash opened a little daylight that a move stuck. Nash upped the pace to establish the first real attack, and Davison was the first to respond. The American was never quite able to latch on though. Miller led Day-Durrin and others, but Nash’s teammate Pendrel came around the group and set her sights on Davison. The Luna rider was able to bridge to Davison, but road tactically and sat on the wheel in front of her, refusing to take to the front to chase her teammate.

As the laps ticked down, Nash’s lead grew, and it became evident that the race would be for the remaining podium spots. Miller and Day-Durrin continued to try and bridge up to Davison and Pendrel, but were kept at bay. Pendrel took a small lead by using her mountain biking skills to ride the Ridley stairs, but Davison was able to bring her back as the two crossed the line for the last lap. Nash didn’t let up until she was about to cross the line, finally sitting up and lifting both arms to celebrate her third win in four years. Behind, Davison was able to hold off Pendrel for her second consecutive runner-up finish. Miller led the remaining chasers across the line to claim fourth.

Men’s Elite Race Presented by Bicycling Magazine

Many of the men’s field might have been out and about at the Interbike trade show before their race, but Sven Nys (Crelan-Euphony) waited till the sun went down to leave his hotel. Afraid the heat would take it’s toll, the world champion saved his trip to the show floor for Thursday.

As the riders lined up, fans and competitors alike knew who had the target on his back for the men’s race. The world champion. After Wout van Aert (Telenet-Fidea) took the Camarena Tequila Whole Shot Award on the opening short lap, Tim Johnson (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) took to the front, with Yannick Eckman (Cal Giant), Jeremy Powers (Rapha-Focus), Van Aert, and Ben Berden (Raleigh) following behind. Bart Wellens (Telenet-Fidea) was the first two attack, winning the Clif Shot 2nd Lap Sprint, but Nys decided it was time to take that rainbow target and move it to the front for everyone to see. With that move, it was three Belgians, Wellens, Nys, and his teammate Sven Vanthourenhout leading the way.

The world champion had enough, and made his first move off the front, leaving everyone else behind.  As he powered away, only Ryan Trebon (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) was able to answer, and caught Nys just before the beginning of the third lap. With a 20 second lead, Nys kept the pace fast, letting Trebon take a turn at the front coming into the barriers. Behind the leaders, Quinten Hermans (Telenet-Fidea) led the chase, with Powers, Eckman, Kabush, and others. Powers decided not to wait for the Telenet-Fidea riders to bring back the leaders, and took it upon himself to start the chase. As he bridged away, Geoff Kabush (Scott-3Rox Racing) joined him, and the two started to make ground on the leaders. With the lead down to 10 seconds on the chasing Powers and Kabush, Nys attacked Trebon, leaving the lanky, dismounted American behind by hopping the barriers and powering off.

Nys sealed his lead with his second move of the night, while Trebon battled on to stay ahead of Powers, as Kabush drifted back a bit. Berden led the chasing group, who would not see the podium finishers again. With 2.5 laps to go, Powers caught Trebon, and the two Americans set off to keep the Canadian chaser behind them. Both riders were wasted from chasing Nys, but Powers had the legs to make a move in the final laps, and left Trebon behind. With a comfortable lead, Nys took the time to high five fans as he came to the line, celebrating with both arms in the air, and the world champion stripes adorning his Crelan-Euphony skinsuit.  Powers eventually followed behind, happy to finish second behind Nys. Kabush was able to catch Trebon, and passed him on the final rise on the course to take the last remaining podium spot. Trebon hung on to fourth, 30 seconds ahead of Van Aert and Hermans from Telenet-Fidea.
