Anders Lund puts an end to his pro career

Team Saxo-Tinkoff’s Anders Lund has decided to end his career as a pro bike rider at the end of this season.

The 28 year old Dane instead wants to study at the University of Copenhagen after a pro career that started in 2007 at Team CSC and continued at Leopard Trek in 2011 before returning to Riis Cycling and Team Saxo-Tinkoff in the last two seasons.

In his career Anders Lund participated in all three Grand Tours of the race calendar and in the Spring’s cobblestone Classics.

“For me this is all about coming to terms with a belief, that I now have achieved what was possible for me given my talent on a bike, and then I have always has the wish to also try something else than cycling. I feel now that the timing is right. My desire to do something is else is greater than my desire to continue as a bike rider, so the decision has actually been a pretty easy one,” Anders Lund says.

“I would never have wanted to move on without my seven years as a professional. It has been a dream of mine to be able to make a living from my sport and to live in Italy. And I’m very thankful to the people, who made this a possibility for me. In many ways, it is a privilege to be able to ride at the top level in the biggest races in the world and have the support of the best and most competent people in the game, and these memories I will keep close to my heart,” he continues.

Team owner Bjarne Riis respects Anders Lund’s decision to end his career.

“Anders already told me a while ago, that he had come to the conclusion to end his career after this season and instead start to study at a university. I have huge respect for this decision. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Anders for his many years with us, his professionalism and his attitude. It has always been an absolute pleasure to have Anders in the team,” Bjarne Riis says.
