This Saturday and Sunday, Nov 9 & 10, the Pennsylvania Convention Center is home to the 4th annual Philly Bike Expo.
The Philly Bike Expo is designed to interest, inspire, inform and entertain bicycle aficionados, weekend enthusiasts and those merely curious about the fun and fitness that bicycling provides.
“We moved to the Pennsylvania Convention Center to expand our reach and the number of things-to-do-and-see,” says show organizer Bina Bilenky Trahan. “With exhibitor space sold out, and many new features scheduled, the 2013 Expo will be our biggest and best yet.”
Artisans and manufacturers of bicycles, accessories and apparel will be displaying their wares. Nutcase Helmets, Cleverhood, Massage Envy Spa, Bright-Bike, Bell’s Bike Shop, Kermesse Sport, Fifo Cycle, Philadelphia Bikesmith, Lizard Head Cycling and others will be raffling off valuable goods and services.
Mary Elizabeth of Alloneword will be creating cycling caps from an eye-catching array of fabrics. Max Hamalainen, co-owner of Philadelphia Bikesmith, will be holding free bicycle fit clinics. RYB Denim, makers of women’s specific cycling jeans will be doing size fittings.
A cycling apparel fashion show has always been a highlight of the Philly Bike Expo. New for 2013 is “Hardcourt Couture” an interactive fashion show and bike polo match. Attendees can watch the latest in cycling fashion come alive as the members of the Philadelphia Bike Polo Club demonstrate their exciting and fast-paced sport. Food trucks, music, prizes and brews from Blue Moon will round out the evening festivities.
R.E.Load Bags and the Philadelphia Bicycle Messenger Association will be presenting Gold Sprints with proceeds going to the Bicycle Messenger Emergency Fund. Race a friend for a chance to win a custom R.E.Load Bag.
Items from the Franklin Institute’s collection of historic bicycles will make a rare appearance outside the Institute, evidencing Philadelphia’s long and rich relationship to bicycle culture.
There will be a special screening of the documentary film “Where are You Go” by Tour d’Afrique about their flagship bicycle tour of Africa.
Friday Nov. 8 Knog and Bicycle Revolutions will lead the Philly Bike Expo Warm-up Night Ride. Saturday morning there’s a Kidical Mass Philly 1 mile family ride to the Expo for kids not ready for the 3.5 mile Kidical Mass routes. Philly Bike Tour Company will lead two different rides on Sunday.
Seminars, presentations, book-signings, how-to’s and family-friendly activities as well as contests, races, food, drink, and parties round out this two-day celebration of everything bicycle.
“Check our website for the complete list of exhibitors, sponsors and goings-on, ” says Trahan. “Whether you’re an avid cyclist or someone with fond memories of that first taste of two-wheeled freedom, the Philly Bike Expo is a don’t-miss event!”
