National Track Calendar winners determined at November's Los Angeles Grand Prix

The USA Cycling National Track Calendar (NTC) concluded last month with the Los Angeles Grand Prix which was held Nov. 22-24 at the Velo Sports Center on the campus of the StubHub Center complex in Carson, Calif.

For sprinters, points were up for grabs in the match sprint and keirin while endurance riders competed in the points race, scratch race, and Madison.

Men’s Endurance

Zachary Kovalcik (Portland, Ore./Sizzle Pie Cycling p/b Velodforma), who had already clinched the men’s endurance standings, placed seventh in the scratch race in LA and increased his points to 145 to close out the 2013 NTC on top and defend his calendar win from a year ago. He finished ahead of second-ranked Al Urbanski (Sizzle Pie Cycling p/b Veloforma) who amassed 55 points and third-ranked Liam Donoghue (Boulder, Colo./Natural Grocers Cycling Team) who totaled 52 points. Owen Gillott(AUS/Team Specialized Racing) and Keith Hillier (Millbrae, Calif./Marc Pro-Strava) were fourth and fifth with 48 and 41 points.

Women’s Endurance

After winning the international omnium’s individual pursuit and scratch race, and placing second in the team pursuit and omnium points race, Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./United Performance) launched herself to the top of the women’s endurance standings to finish in first place for the season with 90 points. She bested second-ranked Jennifer Zierke (Millbrae, Calif./Pinnacle p/b Argon 18) who scored 76 points for the season. Korina Huizar (Roseville, Calif.) was third with 72 points while Kate Wilson (Los Angeles, Calif./Home Depot Center Team) and Elizabeth Newell(Oakland, Calif./NOW Cycling) were fourth and fifth with 56 and 40 points respectively.

Men’s Sprint

Andrew Carlberg (Bryan, Texas/Team Spincycle) remained atop the men’s sprint standings with 63 points.Kevin Mansker (Team Rubicon) totaled 57 points to be ranked second while Danny Robertson (Rolling Meadows, Ill./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) was third with 53 points. Matthew Baranoski(Perkasie, Pa./Pure Energy Racing) and Conor Klupar (Fall City, Wash.) tied for fourth in the standings with 49 points each.

Women’s Sprint

After winning the LA Grand Prix keirin and team sprint with partner Tela Crane (Sammanish, Wash./JL Velo p/b Broadmark Capital), and placing second in the sprint, Melissa (Missy) Erickson (Alexandria, Minn./Momentum Coaching Group p/b Atomic) took over the top spot in the women’s sprint standings to finish the season atop the podium with 149 points. Crane, who won the women’s sprint rankings last year, was second this year with 141 points while Dana Feiss (Telford, Pa./Home Depot Center Team) was third with 99 points. Alissa Maglaty (Bike Central) and Sarah Hammer (Temecula, Calif./United Perforance) were fourth and fifth with 65 and 60 points, respectively.
