In a letter to the Recon Jet Community, CEO and founder Dan Eisenhardt announced that the company’s heads up display sunglasses are one step closer to shipping this spring. The Jet sunglasses are billed as the world’s first sunglasses with an integrated heads up display geared towards athletes.

Recon Instruments launched the Jet in May of 2013, offering the Pilot Edition preorder at $499. The sunglasses feature high quality polarized grey lenses, with a small screen in the lower right portion of your vision. Testing showed this is the optimal location for viewing, but not be distracting. Battery life is expected to be 4-6 hours, but batteries are easily swapped on the fly. The on-board instruments and GPS will provide the heads up display with critical information about your activity like speed, distance, time, and elevation, while WiFi, Bluetooth, and ANT+ connectivity will open up even more possibilities. The software will be an open platform, giving programmers the ability to expand even further to include social media and app integration. The Jet will also include an HD camera with speaker and microphone.

The original projected shipping of December 2013 was pushed back in November due to a hardware redesign. In a blog posted by Eisenhardt earlier this month, he announced that the redesign was complete, and the green light has been given to ramp up production. The frame and lenses are in final testing as well, and should be completed soon. On the OS side, version 3.2 is up and running in the company’s snow goggles, and will be the starting point for the Jet. Recon Engage, the web and mobile engagement platform, is well established on the snow side, and they are working to include cycling and other activities as well. The last piece of the puzzle, the screens the user will see on the heads up display, are also in their final stages.

If you haven’t placed and order yet, Recon is giving you a chance to save. In the spirit of the Tour Down Under, you can save $100 on all Recon HUD’s with code DOWNUNDER100. This discount is good through Sunday, January 26th.
