USA Cycling announced Tuesday that juniors rider Gavin Haley (Louisville, Ky./Red Zone Cycling Elite) will not race in this weekend’s 2014 UCI Cyclo-cross World Championships in Hoogerheide, Netherlands, due to injuries suffered in a training ride crash in Belgium.
“It is a big disappointment that Gavin won’t be able to join the team at this year’s World Championships,” said USA Cycling Cyclo-cross Program Director Marc Gullickson. “He is a valuable member of the team and a rider that has shown significant talent and aptitude at racing on the difficult European courses this season. We will certainly miss him this year but I expect he will bounce back and be even stronger in the years to come. The whole team wishes Gavin a quick recovery and we hope to see him back on the bike very soon.”
Haley was a discretionary selection to the juniors men’s team after placing 12th at 2014 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Jan. 12 in Boulder, Colo. His absence leaves the U.S with four riders to contest Saturday’s juniors men’s race at the world championships: Maxx Chance (Boulder, Colo./Clif Bar Development Cross Team), Peter Goguen (Hopedale, Mass./Race CF), Austin Vincent (Simsbury, Conn./Race CF) and Cooper Willsey (Hinesburg, Vt./Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com).
“When you want something so bad that it becomes all you think about, that is what cyclo-cross worlds is for me,” Haley said. “I will be back many, many more times.”
In addition to the juniors men’s race, the elite women will also be racing for world titles on Saturday, while the U23 and elite men’s races will be contested on Sunday.
