The Air Force Association Cycling Classic (AFACC) returns June 7-8, 2014 with news sure to please cycling enthusiasts of all abilities. In addition to revealing an exciting new route for the event’s
popular Challenge Ride, the AFACC is pleased to announce that The Boeing Company is continuing its support of the D.C. region’s premier series of cycling events, including the Clarendon Cup and Crystal Cup Pro/Am Races, as Presenting Sponsor through 2017.

“Our connection to the Air Force community is one of teamwork and partnership,” said Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing vice chairman, president and chief operating officer. “We’re proud to extend our support for a health-and fitness-focused event that not only gives back to veterans and their families, but also helps the broader
population gain a better understanding and appreciation for the sacrifices they have made.”

The route for the 2014 Air Force Association Cycling Classic’s Challenge Ride has been slightly modified over previous editions, taking in both north and south bound RTE 110. Additionally, the route will modify the way it goes through Crystal City, by only traveling southbound on Crystal Drive, and using RTE 1 from 20th
ST onto RTE 110. The resulting route eliminates tighter sections of roads previously used.

“We worked closely with both local jurisdictions and the County to ensure the best route that accommodates the growing number of participants,” said Robert Laybourn, president, Arlington Sports, the event organizer. “This route allows for 2 or more lanes of space for the cyclists throughout the course, ensuring there is plenty
of space for all.”

This year’s events begin on Saturday, June 8, with the Air Force Association Cycling Classic’s Clarendon Cup. Amateur racers will participate in the first race, which starts at 8:00a.m.; the Men’s Pro race, now in its 17th year, starts at noon. On Sunday, June 9, the pros will again be featured in the Air Force Cycling Classic Crystal Cup, which will follow the non-competitive Air Force Association Cycling Challenge Ride. Women’s and amateur races will complete the day’s schedule. Saturday and Sunday’s races will again be part of the prestigious USA Cycling’s National Criterium Calendar.

Participants in the Air Force Association Cycling Classic Challenge Ride will again be able to earn a gold medal by completing six laps in less than 3 hours. A silver medal is earned by riding four laps, and a bronze for two laps in that timeframe. Registration for the Crystal Ride, the Corporate Challenge and the Kids Races are now open through the events website: www.CyclingClassic.org.
