Pro cycling returns to Philadelphia for the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic, with a weekend of activities planned. Sunday’s pro events will see riders battle for the win at finish line atop the Manayunk Wall. Recently crowned US national road champions, Eric Marcotte (Team SmartStop) and Alison Powers (UnitedHealthcare) will debut their new jerseys at the race.
Deep fields will challenge returning champions Evelyn Stevens
(Specialized -Lululemon) and Kiel Reijnen (UnitedHealthcare) for the win and equal prize money. For Reijnen, a repeat win would be a great birthday present from his team, as he celebrates his 28th birthday on Sunday. UHC will have a number of cards to play against returning favorites Jesse Anthony (Optum – Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Joe Rosskopf (Hincapie Sportswear Devo Team). Team Novo Nordisk will also be looking to put climber Javier Megias or sprinter Martijn Verschoor on the top step with their sponsorship of the Novo Nordisk Walk The Wall event on Saturday.
In the women’s field, watch for last year’s runner up, Joelle Numainville (Optum – Kelly Benefit Strategies) to try and advance to the top step of the podium. Newly crowned road champion, Alison Powers, could also make a run for the line with a number of her fellow UHC teammates. Andrea Dvorak and the Tibco/To The Top Team are also looking to advance on Claudia Häusler’s third place finish in 2013. Astana BePink and China Chongming-Giant-Champion Systems will could contend for the win, but don’t count out Colvita-Fine Cooking, FCS/Zingne p/b Mr. Restore, Mellow Mushroom, Twenty 16 Co, and Theresa Cliff-Ryan and Tina Pic of Fearless Femme. Elle Anderson (Vanderkitten) will be making her debut in Philly after a break out season in cyclocross with the Cal Giant Berry Farms/Specialized team.
To kick off the events, the Philadelphia Amateur Time Trial will be held in the shadows of the Philadelphia Art Museum. While not officially connected to the pro race on Sunday, the Amateur Time Trial has been a fixture of the racing weekend for over two decades, with Tri-State Velo organizing the event since 1996. Participants will race an 8 mile out and back course on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, which runs along the Schuykill River. Â The course is flat and fast, and should see some impressive times as the day goes by. The first racer leaves at 7 AM (yours truly will be off at 7:09:30 for those interested) and the final rider will start just before 9 AM.
Later on in the day, the first inaugural Novo Nordisk Walk The Wall event will give the community a chance to walk the iconic Wall in Manayunk. The event will raise money for diabetes research, and also other local non-profit charities.
“The rise of diabetes is one of the most serious health challenges affecting urban communities today and Novo Nordisk is passionate about helping combat this public health epidemic, especially in our own backyard,” said George McAvoy, vice president, Diabetes Marketing at Novo Nordisk, in a press release. “We look forward to welcoming the Philadelphia community, a city rich with cycling traditions and passionate fans, to the 2014 Novo Nordisk Walk the Wall event, where fans are invited to climb the same stretch of course that has challenged the world’s best professional cyclists for over 30 years: the legendary Manayunk Wall. Together we will beat the Wall. Together we will work to beat diabetes.”
Members of Team Novo Nordisk will be walking the Wall, sharing their stories of living and competing with Type 1 diabetes. The walk starts at Main and Levering Streets in Manayunk at 4 PM. Tickets are $10, or you can purchase a family 4 pack for $20.Â
On Sunday, amateur cyclists will be up bright and early for Velothon Philadelphia. While there have been participation rides in the past, this is a brand new event that will let riders take to the same course as the pros, along with some additional roads, in a competitive and non-competitive event. The Velothon is the first US-based event in a global initiative for mass events by the UCI called Velothon Majors. All roads for the event will be closed to traffic, and chip timing will be used.
The course starts off near the Philadelphia Art Museum and follows the pro race course for one lap. Riders will start to head back towards Manayunk, but will cross the Falls Bridge to Fairmount Park and will be faced with the hills of the Philadelphia Triathlon bike course. Â A quick trip down Martin Luther King Jr. Drive will bring riders back towards the city, with one last detour before heading to the Ben Franklin Parkway. Riders will see the same center city loop the pros had raced in the former Philadelphia International Cycling Classic. The 45 km event finishes back at Lemon Hill, where a post ride celebration will wait, along with a great spot to watch the pro event.
Registration closes on May 31st at 1 PM. Packet pick up will be at Llyod Hall on Kelly drive.
The pro races wrap up the weekend. The women’s race starts at 8:30 AM from the top of the wall, and the men will head off at approximately 12:00 PM.
The second year of the Parx Casino Philly Cycling Classic will follow the same course as last year, which is a slightly truncated version of the former Philadelphia International Cycling Classic course. Instead of starting from the Ben Franklin Parkway, the top of the Wall will be again be the center of activities. From the start, riders will descent along a fast stretch of Pechin Ave and Manayunk Street down to Kelly Drive. The flat stretch along the Schuykill River takes riders to the farthest section of the course at Lemon Hill. The short, but punchy climb will be one of two places where King and Queen of the Mountain points will be earned. A short descent will loop the riders around to Kelly Drive and head back west to the Strawberry Mansion loop, where the feed zone will be located. Another run along Kelly Drive will bring the race back to Manayunk along Main Street. A few right hand corners, and a short stretch of cobbles, will slow the race down, before the left hand turn to face the wall. The second QOM and KOM will be at the top as they cross the finish line of the 12 mile course. The women will ride 5 laps, while the men will see 10.
If you are planning heading to the race, be prepared to walk. One downfall of having the start at the top of the Wall is limited parking. Don’t let this discourage you though. Once there, the party atmosphere of the Wall is one of the things that makes the event great. The neighborhood comes out in force to celebrate and cheer on the riders as they slog up the Manayunk Wall. Whether they are the leaders, or the lanterne rouge, encouragement and beer hand ups are offered to everyone, including the journalists and photographers.
Lemon Hill, Strawberry Mansion, and Main Street Manayunk are also great spots to watch the race, along with Kelly Drive. Lemon Hill has also become a giant celebration of the event, with many fans coming out with pop-up tents and their grills, turning it into a massive tail gate. Though it is a little more laid back and family friendly, the grassy hills erupt as the race passes by. On Main Street in Manayunk, the sidewalks will be packed as shops and restaurants will be open to highlight what the city has to offer.
