Riders claimed the first two titles of the 2015 USA Cycling Cyclo-cross National Championships on Wednesday at Zilker Park in Austin, Texas, as men’s and women’s singlespeed ruled the event’s blustery first day of competition.
Justin Lindine (North Ogden, Utah/Team Redline) nabbed the men’s singlespeed top prize, clinching the Stars-and-Stripes jersey in 39:44. Isaac Neff (Madison, Wis./5Nines-Motorless Motion) and Tim Allen (Golden, Colo./Feedback Sports Racing) sprinted it out for silver, with Neff edging Allen by a second and finishing in 40:11.
“I had a blast,” said Lindine after the race. “It was my first singlespeed race, so I didn’t know what to expect. The course was super challenging, and I’m psyched that it turned out so well.”
In the women’s singlespeed competition, it was Maureen Bruno Roy (Arlington, Mass.) with a 46:21 effort to defend her 2014 crown, followed by Jessica Cutler (Seattle, Wash./Market Street Cycling Club) in 47:01 andEllen Sherrill (South Lake Tahoe, Calif.) in 47:54.
“It was great to be able to race, win it again and defend the championship from last year,” Bruno Roy said. “It was a great course out there, pretty technical and surprisingly slippery even though it’s really dry here today.”
Non-championship races started kicked off the day’s action, as Carolina Gomez Villafane (ARG) won the women’s non-championship race in 36:59, Philip Short (Greensboro, N.C./Hearts Racing Club) took the men’s 10-29 non-championship contest in 40:59, Mark Flis (Salt Lake City, Utah/Squadra Flying Tigers) picked up the men’s 30-44 non-championship category win in 41:41, and James Cochran (Iowa City, Iowa/Atlas Cycling) won the men’s 45+ non-championship race in 41:58.
Damian Schmitt (Bend, Ore./Portland Bicycle Studio) and Christina Probert (Murrieta, Calif./The TEAM) claimed the men’s and women’s industry races with respective 42:11 and 50:19 finishes.
The 2015 Cyclo-cross National Championships will be in full stride on Thursday as the masters riders take the course with all men’s 50+ categories and all women’s 40+ categories. Racing begins at 9 a.m. CST.
