A few weeks back, Bike World News had the chance to check out the new Power saddle from Specialized that was first spotted on Lars Boom’s (Astana) S-Works Tarmac at the Tour Down Under. The Big S remained tight lipped about the new saddle until this week, when they have officially announced their newest product aimed at riders who prefer an aggressive position.
The design of the Power blends together bits of three different lines of saddles to make something pretty unique. It’s approximately 3cm shorter in length than many of the popular saddles on the market, similar to the Sitero TT/Tri saddle. The back of the saddle is a bit wider than you usually find on a race oriented saddle, and is shaped similar to the Phenom cross-country line. The cut out is larger than Specialized’s men’s saddles, taking the shape from their women’s saddles. It’s diverse roots make for a saddle aimed at road, TT/Tri, and cross-country riders of either sex.
The Power saddle is aimed at riders that prefer a more aggressive position on the bike. The trimmed nose and larger cut out helps to promote better blood flow for men and women, even when you are railing it on the drops or flying on the aerobars. It also comes in three different widths, 143mm, 155mm, and 168mm, to find the optimal match for your sit bones. Specialized also designed the saddle to have a stiffer shell to create a more stable base to pedal from.
All together, there will be 19 different versions, which include three different colors, the three widths, and four performance levels, Comp, Expert, Pro, and S-Works. The Comp/Expert will have a thicker foam, a less stiff base, and Cr-Mo and titanium rails, respectively. The Pro/S-Works will have thinner foam, a stiffer carbon/polymer base, and FACT carbon rails. The black saddle will give you the most options with 143mm and 155mm options in all four levels. White has you covered on all sizes in the Expert level, and 143mm and 155mm in S-Works. Team Red is only available in Pro and S-Works and 143mm and 155mm.
