While it may not be the first iteration of a wheelset targeted to the gravel, Zipp’s new 30 Course disc-brake wheels are likely to set the bar higher for products to come.
The 30 Course Disc-brake wheelset is a category-defining product targeted directly at the emerging road/cross/gravel/adventure rider. Available in tubular, clincher and tubeless-ready, the 30 Course Disc-brake looks to be the new benchmark for a durable, high-performance aluminum disc-brake wheelset.
New Aluminum-Rim Technology
The 30 Course is designed from the ground up to tubeless-ready, providing the ability to run lower tire pressures without risk of pinch flats. It also takes some lessons from Zipp’s 202 Firecrest Carbon Clincher, sporting 25mm external and 21mm internal rim widths for low aerodynamic drag, greater stability and predictability in crosswinds.
The wider rim platform also allows for increased air volume, which spreads the tire casing. That helps increase the contact patch with the ground. The result is improved cornering grip and increased comfort on the road, mud and everything in between.
New Hub Technology With the 77/177D
The 30 Course also gets the same 77/177D hubset used in the Zipp 202 and 303 Firecrest Disc-brake wheelsets.
That means pre-loaded bearings, improved seals and proprietary hub flange geometry and spoke hole attachment patterns that optimize torsional and lateral stiffness without sacrificing weight or robustness.
Versatility is increased with thru-axle hubs with end caps that can be swapped by hand.
