Saturday afternoon in Munich could not have been any better! Swatch Prime Line at Munich Mash pulled in tens of thousands of spectators who witnessed Brett Rheeder claim victory at the second round of the FMB Diamond Series. Thomas Genon took second and Nicholi Rogatkin landed in third. Swatch Proteam athlete Sam Pilgrim had a lot of support from the German crowd and finished in 5th. In addition to winning the contest, Brett Rheeder’s backflip tailwhip from the step down also claimed Best Trick. In the FMB Diamond Series, Brett Rheeder’s win at Swatch Prime Line extends his lead in the standings with Nicholi Rogatkin and Thomas Genon still following close behind.
Packed with even more action, the Swatch Prime Line Munich returned for a second year and headlined the action sport festival, Munich Mash. For more than a week course builders were getting dirty creating and shaping the massive slopestyle course with jumps up to 12m / 39ft! The weather was just shy of perfect and the riders had the cheering support of nearly 40 thousand fans!
In qualifying the Canadians showed their dominance and dropped in to the finals eager to keep it that way. Brett Rheeder crashed on his first attempt but came back to nail an unbeatable run including a backflip from the start tower (flatdrop), opposite-truck driver off the upbox, backflip tailwhip on the step down, backflip barspin to tuck nohander, frontflip barspin, tailwhip on the step up, opposite 360 over the spine, truckdriver from the stepdown and a huge cork 720 to finish. Brett is stoked to claim his second win of the season commenting: “I’m on top of the world right now, it feels amazing! The German fans are so nice and I couldn’t be happier!”
The Belgian trick machine, Thomas Genon tried his best to beat the Canadians score of 94.5 but came up short. His top run consisted of a tailwhip from the start tower, 360 x-up off the box, 360-table from the step down, backflip barspin to tuck nohander, cork-720, double whip at the step up, 360 tuck nohander over the spine, a truckdriver-x-up from the step down and tailwhip to tuck nohander on the last booter. This technical run scored him 89.0 points.
One of the hottest riders this season, Nicholi Rogatkin was certainly hoping for more but with such a tough competition the American settled for third and a score 87.25. His run featured the usual big tricks such as triple tailwhip, frontflip barspin and a corked 720 to finish.
The atmosphere in Munich’s Olympic Park was incredible – giant speakers blasted music across the lake and through the park as the world’s top athletes dropped in to show why freestyle mountain biking is one of the best spectator sports out there! The Swatch Prime Line gave the crowds plenty of memories and a lot of action to be stoked about, last but not least at the Swatch Up Your Night after-party where the athletes celebrated their crazy tricks together with the public.
