Felicia Stancil (Lake Villa, Ill/GT Bicycles) won the first gold medal for Team USA in the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto, Canada, in the women’s BMX final on Saturday. Nic Long (Lakeside, Calif./Haro Bikes) claimed bronze in the men’s BMX final.
Stancil, who was ranked second overall after the semifinal heats, edged Domenica Gonzalez (ECU) and Mariana Diaz (ARG) who finished second and third, respectively. All three women finished within one second of each other. Stancil also won bronze on Friday in the women’s BMX time trial.
Long went into the Finals ranked seventh among the eight finalists. In a close race to decide the podium, Long finished behind Tory Nyhaug (CAN) and Alfredo Vintimilla (ECU). In like fashion to the women’s race, the top three finishers crossed the line within one second of each other.
