3T Cycling to Acquire THM Carbones GmbH

Italian component manufacturer 3T Cycling has signed an agreement with THM Carbones GmbH to acquire the German carbon component company. 3T’s purchase of all shares of THM from founder Thomas Mertin will be part of the finalization of the deal, which is expected to take place in August.

“I’ve known Thomas for a long time and always admired not only [Mertin’s] products but also his whole outlook on technology, business and the bike industry,” said Gerard Vroomen, co-owner of 3T. “I look forward to working closely with him, René and the people at both companies to create an exciting future.”

THM is well known for its high end carbon cranks, forks, and brakes, all of which are developed and produced in their Alt Duvenstedt, Germany, facility. Their Clavicula cranks, Scapula fork, and Fibula brakes are all well known for their high quality, high performance, and light weight.

3T, a brand known for innovation, is one of the largest component manufacturers in the world. They currently have three sales offices in Italy, Taiwan, and California, along with 20 service centers and global sales, marketing, and logistics operations. The brand recently won awards for their new take on time trial and triathlon base bars, the Revo.

“I am very happy we came to an agreement,” said Rene Wiertz, CEO and co-owner of 3T. “I have great admiration for what Thomas and Petra have achieved with THM, and I say that also as a very satisfied customer of their products. With THM making the lightest possible components and 3T focusing on aerodynamics, it’s a perfect fit. Together we can create a company with a global reach and unrivaled technical capability. Our products are complementary: THM makes the world’s best and lightest cranks and brakes, 3T makes most of the other parts of the bike”.

The acquisition will see the brands keep their individual identity, but integrate technology and resources. THM will continue to production in Germany and begin to integrate distribution into 3T’s global distribution network. 3T will also provide additional resources for R&D to THM. Additionally, the German brand’s technical team will be working with 3T in development of new products.

“This is a great opportunity for THM,” added THM founder Thomas Mertin. “The agreement with 3T gives us a global distribution network to expand our brand. THM has a clear roadmap to deliver top-notch products, manufactured in Germany. With 3T’ backing and commercial strength, we will be able to focus even more on the technical side and leave sales and distribution to the experts at 3T.”

Once the acquisition is finalized, Mertin will continue with THM in technical development, where Wiertz will become CEO of both 3T and THM.
