Fall foliage peaking in Mesa Verde Country

  • Ron

Fall has arrived in Southwest Colorado, making it the peak time to visit Mesa Verde Country  for leaf-peaping. The photo above shows Hesperus Mountain (Debe’ntsa – Navajo Sacred Mountain, photo credit Tyana Arviso) in the San Juan National Forest.

There’s plenty going on to enjoy during your trip.

  • Unbeatable Weather – Deep blue skies, warm daytime temperatures, crisp nights and colorful leaves prompt many to say it’s their favorite time to visit.
  • Special Rates – Farview Lodge in Mesa Verde National Park is located 15 miles inside the park grounds at an altitude of 8,200 feet. The lodge not only has beautifully appointed rooms, it also boasts the Metate Room, an onsite fine dining restaurant. The lodge is offering special rates until its season closure on Oct. 23.
  • Hike, Bike & Sightsee Without the Crowds – Fall is an ideal time to lace up the hiking boots and hit the trails or pedal the singletrack of Phil’s World and Boggy Draw.
  • Trail of the Ancients Scenic Byway – Meander this 114-mile route that travels through archaeological and scenic wonders. A four- to five-day itinerary is recommended, so you don’t miss a thing!
  • Farm Food, Colorado Wine & Craft Brews – Peaches, apples, corn, beans and squash are all at their peak during early fall in Mesa Verde Country. The area’s unique farm-to-fork restaurants put locally sourced veggies and fruit front and center in sumptuous dishes you won’t find elsewhere. Food is paired with Colorado wines and inventive craft brews.
  • Dolores Harvest Festival, October 8 – This fest is all about the Montezuma County apples and produce. Local hard apple cider and beer, a pie walk, apple and cider tastings, preserves, crafts, music and more!
  • Anasazi Heritage Center Events & Tours – Don’t miss the current exhibit: “Weaving Stories: Basketry in the Southwest,” a visually stunning exhibit exploring the role of Native American baskets from ancient traditions to modern works of art. There are also Curation Tours every Thursday through October, as well as a Ranger talk and tour of the Escalante Pueblo every Saturday through Nov. 1.
