23 named to Team USA for Road Worlds

USA Cycling announced today a partial roster of athletes that will represent Team USA at the 2017 UCI Road World ChampionshipsSeptember 16-24, in Bergen, Norway.

Twenty-three athletes are named to the elite women’s, U23 men’s, junior women’s, and junior men’s road race and time trial squads. USA Cycling will name the athletes for the elite men’s road race and time trial onSeptember 9.

A seasoned team will line up for the elite women’s road race, including all-around racer Megan Guarnier (San Mateo, Calif./Boels Dolmans Cycling Team) who was second overall at the Tour of Norway and also a stage winner at Giro Rosa, powerful climber Katie Hall (Oakland, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling Women’s Team) who was second overall at the Tour of California, veteran racer and reigning time trial and road race national champion Amber Neben (Lake Forest, Calif./Team Velo CONCEPT), renowned sprinter Coryn Rivera (Orange County, Calif./Sunweb) who placed first in both Trofeo Binda and the Tour of Flanders this year, strong breakaway rider Lauren Stephens (Dallas, Texas/Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank), aggressive climber Tayler Wiles (Fairfax, Calif./UnitedHEalthcare Pro Cycling), and formidable sprinter Ruth Winder(Lafayette, Calif./UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling).

Neben is also the reigning time trial world champion and she’ll look to defend that title again this year. Joining her from Team USA in the time trial will be Lauren Stephens, Tayler Wiles, and Chloe Dygert (Bremerton, Wash./Sho-Air TWENTY20) who is the reigning continental champion in the time trial.

For the U23 men’s competition, a five-man road race squad has been named and is comprised of consistent and tactical rider William Barta (Boise, Idaho/Axeon Hagens Berman) whose stand-out result in 2017 was fourth at the U23 Liege Bastogne Liege, first-year U23 rider Ian Garrison (Decatur, Ga./Axeon Hagens Berman) who was second at the Gent Wevelgem U23 Nations Cup race, reigning U23 individual pursuit national champion Brandon McNulty (Phoenix, Ariz./Rally Cycling), experienced rider Justin Oien (Escondido, Calif./Caja Rural-Seguras RGA) who recently stepped up to a full season on the pro-continental level, and standout performer Neilson Powless (Roseville, Calif./Axeon Hagens Berman) who is your reigning U23 road race national champion and silver medalist from the Pro Road Race National Championships.

Additionally, Powless and McNulty will compete in the time trial.

Four women will kit up in red, white and blue for the junior women’s road race. The squad includes all-around rider Alijah Beatty (Washington, Iowa/NorthStar Development) who won six track national titles as well as the junior road race national title, strong climber Megan Heath (Alpharetta, Ga./Rally Sport Cycling Team), skilled time trialist and sprinter Summer Moak (Phoenix, Ariz./TWENTY20 Pro Cycling), and aggressive breakaway rider Abigail Youngwerth (Boise, Idaho/TWENTY20 Pro Cycling).

Moak and Youngwerth will also contest the time trial.

In the junior men’s competition, six men will race for Team USA including reigning national champion in both the time trial and team pursuit Kendrick Boots (Centennial, Colo./Groove Subaru Excel Sports), reigning national champion in the road race Cole Davis (Folsom, Calif./NCCF/Team Specialized Juniors), consistent stage racer Matteo Jorgenson (Boise, Idaho/Hot Tubes Cycling Team), strong all-around rider Sean Quinn (Sherman Oaks, Calif./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized) who was fifth in the Tour du Pays de Vaud, committed teammate Conor Schunk (Charlotte, NC/Masters Cycling Systems LLC), and Tour de l’Abitibi overall winner Riley Sheehan (Boulder, Colo./LUX Cycling/Stradling p/b Specialized).

Boots is fresh off a trip to Junior Track Worlds and Sheehan was second in the L’Abitbi time trial. This pair will represent Team USA on the junior men’s time trial course.
