It’s been a while since our last update to the UCI Approved Frame and Wheel Lists, so let’s jump right in.
A few big names added frames to the list since our last update, including Colnago, Factor, Focus, Pinarello, and Time.
Colnago’s C64 superbike gets the disc brake treatment and a few other updates. It’s easily recognizable with its lug style frame design in full carbon. The biggest change between the rim and disc brake version is the almost completely internally routing for the cables. On an electronic drivetrain set up, the cables run through the bars and pop out long enough to curve and head into the stem. From there, everything runs internally through the frame and fork to get to the brakes and derailleurs, making an extremely clean set up.
Factor, sponsor of AG2R, add their The One in disc brake form to the list. The bike uses flat mount calipers front and rear to keep things tidy. The One, in general, is a pretty unique looking bike, with it’s split downtube design and bayonet style fork, which helps keep the cable routing completely internal from brake lever to caliper when using their OTIS bar stem combo. Factor increased clearance for larger tires and stiffened up the frame a little with the update as well.
Focus dropped in the Izalco in disc brake form. The Izalco Max, the brand’s top road race bike, is a do-it-all frame. With a claimed frame weight of 745g (size unspecified), you are sure to be able to get some very lightweight builds. If the Izalco is anything like their Mares cyclocross bike, it is stiff and responsive, and the disc brakes will be a benefit for carving down mountain roads with it’s acurate and predictable steering.
Pinarello adds some high end cush to their line up with their Dogma K10S Disc. With a new smart dampening system out back called EDSS 2.0, sensors help the system to lock and unlock the elastomer and hydraulically controlled suspension based on feedback it collects on the road conditions. It has controls just above the newer Di2 bar end control port, located on a panel in the downtube, and it can also be controlled through an app on compatible Garmin devices. The 1cm of travel isn’t a ton, but will help smooth out rough sections on long rides or races like Paris-Roubaix.
It’s been quite a while since we heard from Time when it comes to bikes. The revamped Alpe d’ Huez line is all about being light and stiff for climbing. Time used Vectran fibers to help improve ride quality, along with the chunky Aktiv fork seen on some of the other bikes they make. For now, it comes rim brake only, but a disc version will be coming in the next year.
This only scratches the surface of the frames below, so click on the links shown for the brands and models to learn more.
When it comes to wheels, there are some big names on the list, along with other small boutique brands and some Asian brands adding to their credibility.
3T adds their Discus 45 and 60 disc brake wheels in tubular form to the list. With sponsoring Aqua Blue with their unique line of 1x frames, the Exploro and Strada, it was a matter of time until we would see their top-end road wheels on the list. The Discus 45 is new to the line-up, which previously only had the 35 and 60 in clincher version only.
Bontrager recently launched their new XXX wheel line up with an updated shape and rim brake track that gets a laser treatment. The additions to the list though, are disc, which I am sure is to provide the Trek team with the wheels they need to compete on disc brake bikes all season long.
FLO, a popular name in the triathlon world, adds a number of wheels to the list. Sizes range from 30mm deep to super deep 90mm. Some are full carbon, with a few in an aluminum rim/carbon faring combo. While not specifically listed as rim or disc brakes, both options are offered on their site
Princeton Carbon Works is a relatively new name to the cycling world. A group of elite rowers/Princeton-Boston University “nerd” turned to cycling and designed a wheel from scratch. What they have created is the Wake 6560. The 6560 refers to the tallest and shortest points on the undulating rim shape. Bases on their wind tunnel testing, they say their wheel has less drag than a Zipp 858 and is lighter than a 303. Those are some bold claims, but we are excited to see some fresh ideas come into the wheel market.
Shimano adds two more wheels to the list, both are lower level aluminum clinchers. The Ultegra level RS700 is a fairly standard tubeless clincher in rim brake form. The RS300 is an even lower level wheelset coming in at around $250. It’s interesting to see Shimano spending the resources to add mid and lower level training clinchers to the list.
As with frames, there are plenty more wheelset to explore, so use the links to visit each brand’s sites. And as always, here are the links to past list updates to explore previous additions to the list.
