Caltanissetta-Etna (Osservatorio Astrofisico) 169km – total elevation 2,800m
Thursday’s 6th stage of the 2018 Giro d’Italia sees the race tackle its’ first climbs, with a Category 1 ascent to the Etna Astrophysical Observatory dominating the finish.
While the stage will see an undulating profile and twisting roads over the first 130km, it all comes down the the climb up Mount Etna.
The final climb (15km) begins in Ragalna. Over the first 10km, the road is relatively wide, yet steep at points (max. gradient 16%). The roadway narrows 5.5km before the finish, as the route follows short periods in the woods and on lava fields.
For the final kilometer, the route climbs and bends slightly until the final 150m, where the road stretches out, with gradients around 6%. The road at the finish is just 6m wide, and (the finish line sits on a 6m-wide asphalt road).
