With the 2018 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships currently underway in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, BMC and SCOTT Sports both took advantage of the event to show off their latest XC bikes that will be racing this weekend.
BMC Fourstroke 01
Born to surpass the demands of the world’s top XC athletes, the BMC Fourstroke 01 delivers the ultimate performance on the most demanding courses. BMC’s holistic approach to look at the bike as an entire system allowed them to develop their fastest and most intuitive race bike ever.
A purpose-designed race machine, every element of its structure is crafted to optimize speed, save seconds, and keep riders ahead of the pack.
The big innovation of the BMC Fourstroke 01 is its’ integrated dropper post, dubbed RAD (Race Application Dropper) by BMC. With its intuitive two-position adjustment RAD delivers maximum descending and uphill performance. With an overall weight of only 345g RAD is ~100g lighter than a conventional dropper post through its integrated design and its’ oversized elliptic structure is more resistant to stress than a conventional round post.
The reduced number of parts also improves the system’s performance and durability.
While still a 100mm travel XC bike, the Fourstroke 01 takes some cues from trail bikes with its BWC (Big Wheel Concept) Race geometry. BWC Race was designed to attack the fastest, steepest and loosest XC courses with all the confidence of its 67.5˚ head angle and a long front-end. The 100mm travel fork with its 44mm offset ensures easy to handle steering on hairpins and technical sections. BMC updated the Fourstroke 01 with 429mm short chainstays to help you delivering power in the most efficient way with heaps of traction on the most technical sections. The steep 75.5˚ seat angle puts you in a more central position so you can attack steep sections with the perfect weight distribution.
SCOTT Spark RC 900 World Cup
Olympic Champion, 6 time World Champion and 6 time World Cup Champion Nino Schurter will be looking to capture another rainbow jersey aboard the latest evolution of his SCOTT Spark RC 900 World Cup. This 9.86 kg (incl. pedlas) race-dedicated full-suspension weapon is bred to win. For the UCI Worlds at Lenzerheide, SCOTT and Sram’s designers worked together on a Swiss Army Knife style race design with tons of nice details.
Schurter will be running the Fraser iC SL 90mm stem-handle bar combo from SCOTT’s sister company Syncros. The Fraser iC SL has a negative rise of -25°, keeping the handlebars really low to maximize the advantages of Nino’s aggressive riding position.
The frame of the Spark RC900 weighs in at just 1779g and utilizes the lightest and most exclusive HMX carbon fibers and a sophisticated carbon lay-up process. The frame is made of 752 single carbon layers, all put together by hand. The heart of the frame is the Trunnion mount: the shock body extends between the two lower mounting bolts which results in more stroke for the same eye to eye length. The shorter shock enables a very compact frame and shock package, which integrates tightly to the seat tube.
SRAM XX1 Eagle Black Box 12-speed drivetrain is quite common now, but it’s surprising to see that Schurter powers up the trail with a massive 38-tooth chainring, depending on the course.
Finally, keeping the ride smooth, Schurter’s bike sports a 100mm Rock Shox SID World Cup Carbon RL3 Charger Black Box fork paired with a custom 3-mode rear shock via SCOTT’s proprietary TwinLoc Suspension System.
