2019 Giro d’Italia: Stage 17 Preview

Stage 17 of the 2019 Giro d’Italia serves up several urban areas with their requisite hazards along with with categorised summits in Elvas and Terento, leading to the foot of the final climb in Anterselva/Antholz.

The stage starts in Commezzadura in the Val di Sole region and travels 181km to Anterselva/Antholz with 3,000m of climbing. The route starts out with an 18km downhill run to the Val di Non before taking on the uncategorized climb of the Passo della Mendola from the Fondo. The course drops down into Bolzano and then climbs up the Eisack Valley, all the way to Bressanone. The riders will take in a succession of climbs and descents, with categorised summits in Elvas and Terento. The riders descend 18km from Terento to Brunico before the final 27km climb of Anterselva/Antholz.

The final climb is very demanding, sloping at an average 8.5% gradient from 5.5km to go, all the way until the final kilometer. After a short, intense final ascent, the route reaches the cross-country skiing track at the Biathlon stadium, then drops for 100m through the tunnel that passes under the road, to finally enter the stadium. The home straight (110m) is on 6.5m wide tarmac, after the shooting range.
