Swiss brand SPENGLE has been quietly bringing back a three-blade design they pioneered over two decades ago. The original aluminum and carbon SPENGLE wheels were ahead of their time, but now that materials and construction methods have caught up, the brand is back with a full carbon monocoque wheelset. And if you want an even more unique version of these wheels, you’ll want to check out their new Collections by SPENGLE edition wheelsets. The wheels alone will turn heads, but these will take it to a whole new level.
If you remember back to School House Rock, one of Bob Dorough’s songs taught us that 3 is a magic number. SPENGLE believes so too. Instead of 24, 28, or 32 spokes, their three blades have virtually an unlimited number of spokes if you think about the individual fibers in the carbon. The three blades and monocoque construction distributes the impact forces equally around the wheel. During the R&D process, they used Computational Fluid Design to test the aerodynamics, impact, and strength.
During production, the wheels are embedded with an RFID tag that tracks them throughout the manufacturing process. The one-piece monocoque design mixes artisan construction and computer-controlled curing process to create an incredibly strong wheel, which is made in the EU. Due to the incredibly tight tolerances, the hubs are their own design, with Shimano internals for the rear hub. To mate the hubs to the rest of the wheel, they use a method of plasma bonding to ensure they will not separate from the wheel.
Currently, the SPENGLE Monocoque is only available as a 650b wheelset. Aimed at enduro, the 650b is also versatile enough to be used for gravel and urban riding. The full carbon rim is tubeless-ready and hookless, so it should be easier to mount tubeless tires. They know that not everyone rides a 650b though, and there are other types of riders out there, so they’ve been working on a 700c wheel and will have a 3D printed preview on display at Eurobike 2019. They expect the new wheels should be available later this Fall.
SPENGLE wheels are already available in five colors with five different colored labels. At Eurobike 2019, they will have their Collections by SPENGLE creations from European and US artists available, including Chromeo, Iridescent, Popping Cherry, Molten Lava, and Neon Glitch. Each design will be limited to 10 wheelsets each, and let’s just say, there is a bit of an uncharge over the standard $1,600 cost.
For SPENGLE, it was more than just adding some color to their wheels. The Collections by SPENGLE project has given them a chance to look beyond the functionality and performance of their wheels and really explore the aesthetic of their wheels.
Chromeo – $5,900
Just by the name, this one is pretty easy to guess. SPENGLE takes the Monocoque wheels and gives them a shiny chrome painted treatment. Â Over 40 hours of painting and polishing goes into each wheelset to give them their clean finish. This finish gives them an old school look with all of the modern technology behind the wheels.
Iridescent – $7,100
When I think of iridescent, it takes me back to the 2000’s, cars with chameleon paint jobs and color-shifting wind jackets from the Jersey shore beaches. Â Depending on what angle you look at the wheels from, you see a different color.
Five different colors go into the Iridescent finish that can be seen at different angles. That means as you look at the curved surfaces of the wheel, you’ll see different colors pop.
Molten Lava – $8,000
The Molten Lava wheels are probably most intricate on offer. The golden centers fade to fiery red blades and rims. The multiple layers of the paint’s design gives it a shimmering effect in the sunlight. Â It’s understandable that these are the most expensive wheels in the line.
Neon Glitch – $7,300
These are probably the hardest to describe. Think abstract art meets bikes. These hand-painted creations blend a wide pallet of colors to create a one of a kind look that is truly a work of art.
Popping Cherry – $3,500
These wheels will add a bit of sparkle to your ride. Silver metal flake was added to the paint during application to give it some flash in the sunlight. The dark cherry red shadowing gives them a bit of shaping and contour.
On top of the premium finish and lifetime warranty on all of their wheels, personal delivery of Collections by SPENGLE wheels is included to make sure that they get to you in pristine condition.
If you are in the market for some seriously bling wheels, learn more about them on SPENGLE’s website, and you can place your order there. We have a set of 650b in the queue for review, and look forward to putting some road and gravel miles on them in the near future.
