Jesus Herrada of the Cofidis team took the win in Stage 6 of the 2019 Vuelta a Espana, doing today what his brother couldn’t do yesterday.
“There is no vengeance, only new opportunities,” said Herrada at the stage finish. “I was targeting this stage because I know the start and the final climb pretty well. This victory is for my brother, who came close to taking the victory yesterday. It’s also for my family and my partner, who came to the stage; and for the team, obviously. It was hard to get the break going. Halfway through the stage, we didn’t know if we were gonna make it. When Teuns accelerated, I stuck to his wheel and I saved energy for the sprint. And I got the win. To win a stage and to wear the leader’s jersey are both beautiful. But this victory was my goal for the year, to get my first Grand Tour win. And I’ve done on the stage I was targeting! I can go home with peace in my mind but I’ll be looking for more opportunities and they’ll come.”
Team Bahrain Merida took their first-ever Grand Tour leader’s jersey on a Grand Tour with Dylan Teuns finishing second today to move into the overall lead.
“It was a goal in this Vuelta” he explains “I started to realise that it was possible to get the leader’s jersey in a Grand Tour. Yesterday I was disappointed about not being in the breakaway, but I still kept going on the climb so as not to lose too much time and it was all in the plan actually”.
Dylan was part of the 11-man group breakaway of the day and he was very active in the finale, trying to attack to take also today’s stage win: “I knew a 3-4 minute climb is my speciality, like the Ardennes, and with about 4km to go I just went full gas, with the hope that nobody would stay in the wheel, but there was one guy who could follow. He didn’t want to pass me and to do a turn, and then I didn’t have the punch anymore. I gave everything for the jersey today. Also for the victory, but in the end, one guy was smarter or stronger”.
