Fernando Gaviria claimed the first win of the season for UAE Team Emirates on stage 2 of the Vuelta a San Juan in Argentina. The 25 year old timed his sprint to perfection to come around the other sprinters for a comfortable victory in another hectic finale.
Stage 2 started in Pocito, where it also finished with laps of a circuit over 168.7km on a relatively flat course.
Gaviria now moves into the leaders jersey which he will wear on stage 3.
Tomorrow’s stage 3 will be a 15.2 km individual time-trial which should see a re-shuffle of the General Classification. Tom Bohli and Brandon McNulty will be hoping for strong performances in their first test against the clock of 2020.
Gaviria: “It feels really good because it’s the first race of the season and my first race back with Max. Max was caught up in a crash near the end so couldn’t help but McNulty and Bohli did great work. This win is great motivation for the team for the whole week. I will enjoy wearing the leaders jersey tomorrow.”
