Aussie brand Cycliq, makers of combination light and cameras for cycling, have announced the next generation of their rear-facing Fly6. The newest generation drops the weight and shrinks the form factor, but still provides a powerful light, sharp video, and a host of other features to keep you seen and safe on the road.
Let’s face it, if you ride on the road, you’ve probably had some close calls with motorists. Even bike paths can be sketchy at times. Whether motorists are distracted, unaware of local laws regarding cyclists, or are aggressive, having a camera to capture an incident can go a long way to helping your case when law enforcement is involved.
“We believe that cyclists deserve to feel safe on the roads, and this major release for our flagship Fly6 is a demonstration of our commitment to taking on the feedback of our customers and leveraging the R&D that we’ve done over a number of years,” said fellow director Ben Hammond.
Plus, you never know when something viral might happen on your ride.
The new Fly6 comes in at a 71mmx35mmx40mm, which shaves almost 10mm in the height, and 5mm in depth. At 77g, it reduces the unit by about 33g. The shape stays about the same, but the USB-C charging port and the microSD slot move to the side. On the front, it keeps the same light ring around the camera lens, but drops to one LED behind a lens instead of two regular LED’s and one behind a lens on the previous model.
The camera provides up to 5 hours of HD footage in camera only mode and up to 4 hours with the rear light. Resolution maxes out at 1920x1080p @ 30fps, or 1280x720p @ 60fps from the 135 degree wide-angle lens. It continues the looping recording mode from the previous version that makes sure you never run out of space. If an incident does happen, it goes into black box mode, locking the footage and sound from before and after the incident.
It’s more than just a camera though. The Gen 3 Fly6 also puts out 50 lumens of light in multiple patterns to help you be seen at any time of day. It doesn’t matter if it is the middle of the day or middle of the night, having a light flashing on your bike will help you be noticed by motorists. For me, regardless of the bike, and any ride but races, I always make sure I have something bright and flashing on the front and back of my bike.
“The key for us has been to deliver a product that is simpler, safer and suitable for all operating conditions, all in a smaller form factor,” said Cycliq director Paul Claessen.
Like with the previous Fly6 CE and current Fly12 CE, the camera connects to the Cycliq app to control the settings, but also allows you to review footage, allowing you to show what has been recorded if an incident happens.
The Fly6 comes with everything you need to get up and running, including a 32gb memory card. It comes with multiple shims to use with the eighth turn mount to get the right fit, no matter what shape your seatpost is. There are also two different length straps and a tether include.
The New Fly6 goes on presale for those that had registered over the past month, with expected shipping in August. If you want to get in on it, you can still register on their site, or by clicking here. Preorder for everyone else starts on June 15th. Pricing is set at USD 229 / GBP 199 / EUR 219 / AUD 329.
