Alexey Lutsenko survives a stage-long breakaway to win Stage 6 of the 2020 Tour de France while Adam Yates stays in yellow.
The peloton left the town of Le Teils and a group of eight riders made an early attack. In the group were Nicolas Roche (Sunweb), Neilson Powless (EF), Edvald Boasson Hagen (NTT), Daniel Oss, Rémi Cavagna (Deceuninck-Quick Step), Greg Van Avermaet (CCC), Jesus Herrada (Cofidis) and Alexey Lutsenko (Astana).
Herrada and Cavagna fell back to the peloton, leaving a group of six out front. The group eventually rode out to a 3’30” lead by km 27, putting Van Avermaet into the virtual maillot jaune.
The lead eventually expanded to 6’30” at km 80. That would be the biggest gap of the day.
As the race entered the final 30km, there was a great deal of climbing on hand and the gap began to drop. The break began to splinter, with birthday boy Powless briefly leading overall before Lutsenko powered to the front. Still, with less than 20km to go, the gap still hovered at the 3 minute mark with 6 leaders within 16 seconds of Lutsenko.
Meanwhile, Fabio Aru was able to attack the peloton and open up a small gap to the yellow jersey group.
With 13km to go, Lutsenko lead Herrada by 29″ over the crest of the Col de Lusette. After a brief respite, he was still looking at over 8km of climbing to the finish. Aru’s brief venture into no man’s land ended soon after.
With 8.7km remaining, Lutsenko opened his lead a little to 3’15”. Herrada continued to chase. Roche, meanwhile, sat up and waited to rejoin the peloton.
5km from the finish, Lutsenko lead Herrada by 38″ while still 3’17” ahead of the peloton. Van Avermaet and Powless were still holding on between Herrada and the peloton.
3km to go and Herrada was 45 seconds back. Adam Yates was safely at the head of the peloton with his Mitchelton-Scott-SCOTT teammates.
Barring a last minute mechanical, the stage was definitely going to Lutsenko. He continued to open his gap over Herrada.
Lutsenko does it! Solo win off of an initial 8 man breakaway!
Back in the peloton, Julian Alaphilippe makes an attack to claw back some seconds! It’s only a few, but he shows he still has an eye on yellow. The rest of the peloton crossed the line 2’53” back from Lutsenko.
