Boyd Cycling Launch More Affordable Prologue Series Wheels

Boyd Prologue 44 Disc

US wheel maker Boyd Cycling is bringing their wheels to the masses with the new Prologue series. The new line will sit below their current Podium series of road wheels and offer what looks to be a promising wheelset for just over a grand.

The new wheelset takes advantage of automated production methods to lower costs of the wheel. They are made from a continuous layup, which means there is uniform thickness throughout the rim. Conversely, the Podium series uses a variable thickness where nipple beds are reenforced and other parts of the rim have a reduced thickness to save 20g per rim.

The new Prologue Series are all hooked clinchers and include disc brake options in 28 (1570g per set) and 44mm (1675g) and a rim brake version in 44mm (1555g). Boyd Skyuka hubs are used on the build and feature Abec 3 sealed cartridge bearings instead of Enduro bearings on the higher hubs. The Shimano/SRAM and SRAM XDR freehub bodies are available, and they can be swapped without tools. The rear hub has 10-degree engagement, which isn’t quite as fast as their other hubs. Boyd finishes the build with Pillar SR XTRA 1423 spokes and Pillar Double Square Brass nipples, with 24 on the front, 28 on the rear.

“With carbon being more and more durable, cyclists are looking to ride carbon as an everyday option, through all different styles and speeds of riding. Carbon is no longer a ‘preserved for race day’ specialty set. Whether people are looking for a budget-friendly upgrade over a stock wheelset or an excellent performing set for everyday use, the Prologue wheels are sure to add the next level of excitement to your ride.”

The Prologue wheels use hooked bead clincher rims.

Each Prologue wheelset retails for $1,050 and comes with a lifetime warranty. They are only available as complete wheesets. They are available now directly from Boyd, or from one of their dealers.
