On test: Mobile by Peak Design

  • Ron

I’ve been holding onto a secret for a couple of weeks now, playing around with the new Mobile by Peak Design system on my bike and in my car and shop.

What is Mobile by Peak Design, you ask? It’s an adaptable ecosystem of phone cases, mounts and accessories for your mobile phone – including your bike. Mobile by Peak Design uses a very low profile (2.4mm) phone mount that they call SlimLink that incorporates a magnets and a zirconia ceramic ring that work together to securely hold your phone.

The Everyday Case – a durable polycarbonate phone case wrapped in Peak Design’s custom high-performance nylon canvas fabric – is the core of the system, but a slim, adhesive-backed Universal Adapter is also available that works with nearly any phone or hard, non-textured case. Peak Design intends to support additional phone models in the months and years to come. The case—available for iPhone (including iPhone 12) and Samsung devices—supports wireless charging and strikes an ideal balance between ruggedness, protection, and refined aesthetics.

The magnets are very strong and are more than enough to keep your phone steady and protected with the car and wall mounts, but the system goes one better for the bike mount. When you place your phone onto the Bike Mount Pro, aluminum teeth on the mount lock onto the ceramic ring and your phone will absolutely not come off until the release button is pressed. The bike mount has been tested as secure even for downhill mountain biking.

As mentioned, we received pre-production samples a couple of weeks ago and the Kickstarter campaign for the system is now live.

Our care package included:

  • The Universal Adapter – this mounts to your existing phone case and ties into the rest of the system.
  • The Bike Mount Pro – a high quality inboard our outboard phone holder for 31.8 bars
  • The Mobile Tripod
  • The Wall Mount
  • The Car Mount
The Mobile Tripod (pictured here with the Everyday Case) is nearly as slim as the Universal Adapter and is designed to be kept on the phone for quick and easy usage.

Machined out of aluminum and using 3M’s VHB (very high bond) adhesive for mounting, the Car Mount is decidedly more robust than most its’ competitors.

I personally struggled to find a good place in my car to mount it directly to the dash, so I adapted my existing CD slot phone holder to work with the Peak Design Car Mount and results so far have been quite satisfying.

I’ve installed the Wall Mount in my shop and it keeps my phone off the work bench and close by.

The Kickstarter campaign for Mobile by Peak Design has been live since October 19 and has already vastly exceeded its goal of $100,000.
