Closing on March 2nd at 9:46PM EST, the Moxy Portal Kickstarter project aims to create a companion app, cloud storage, and web tools for Moxy‘s muscle oxygen sensors. With a goal of $53,000, they have already raised double that. You still have time to join, which will give you perks to help take your training to the next level.
Moxy created their first muscle oxygen sensor back in 2013. While most people are familiar with training with power and heart rate, muscle oxygen is an emerging training metric. SmO2 is the measurement of oxygen in the muscles during exercise. While this type of measurement previously meant running tests in a lab setting, the Moxy Monitor takes this measurement into the real world and collects data while you are training and racing. It uses LED’s and a photo detector to create a near-infrared spectrometer (NIRS) to collect the data.
The Moxy Sensor can be used in three ways, assessment, guidance of training, and performance monitoring during competition. Â For assessment, you can use the sensor to help identify a limiting factor in your training, whether it is circulatory, respiratory, or muscular. Once this is determined, you can fine tune your training to improve in that area. During competition, it helps athletes monitor exertion levels to perform optimally.
The sensor attaches by tape patches or with a wrap. Moxy offers Vetrap, a stretch wrap that sticks to itself, but not the skin and is reusable multiple times. There is also a cover that can be used to block out light for better accuracy.
Currently, the Moxy Monitor works with various websites and Garmin devices to collect data. The project hopes to expand Moxy’s offerings to create and app and web based portal to help collect, share, and analyze data easier for Moxy users. The app will allow users to record and view your data in real time on your phone or tablet. The cloud will house the data, and the web tools will provide more in-depth analysis of your training.
There are two options for backing the project. A $10 level shows support, but there aren’t any benefits provided. At $199 or more, you get a permanent membership to the Portal ($349 value), access to four Zoom calls to provide design input, early access to the app and web tools, and an invite to join a private forum hosted by integrative physiologist and researcher at Training Think Tank Evan Peikon, Moxy Developer Andri Feldmann, and researcher Philip Batterson.
At $329 or higher, you get the added benefit of a permanent subscription to “The Science and Practice of Performance Enhancement with NIRS” by Evan Peikon ($299 value).
At $549, you get the above benefits, along with the ability to trade in your Moxy3 sensor for a Moxy5.
At $649, former BSX or Human Hex owners can trade their devices in for a Moxy5 and get the above mentioned benefits.
At $799, you’ll receive a Moxy5 Sensor bundle, along with the above benefits.
Estimated timeline for the app and web tool release is September/October of 2021.
If you decide to back the project, you will need to have a Moxy5 sensor to be able to take advantage of the new tools. Single sensors start at $819 each, or you can buy a 3-pack kit for $2,439 to use on multiple athletes or to collect data on multiple muscle groups at the same time.
The Moxy Sensor provides insight into your body, training, and competition that was previously only available in the lab. With the new Moxy Portal, you’ll be able to do more with that data and further enhance your training and racing. Be sure to back the project before it closes on March 2nd.
