2021 Giro d’Italia: Stage 4 Results

  • Ron

American Joe Dombrowski got an early birthday present today, surviving a long breakaway to win Stage 4 of the 2021 Giro d’Italia in Sestola. Second place finisher Alessandro De Marchi moved into the Maglia Rosa for the first time in hs career at the age of 34.

It was a hard fought stage among the GC favourites as well. Egan Bernal, Aleksandr Vlasov, Mikel Landa and Hugh Carthy gained 11’’ over Remco Evenepoel, Romain Bardet, Simon Yates and Dan Martin, 34’’ over Vincenzo Nibali, Pavel Sivakov and Jai Hindley while Joao Almeida lost more than four minutes in the rainy and cold racing conditions of Stage 4.

Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner Joseph Dombrowski said: “I was feeling good in the last 50km , just trying not to do too much work and be a bit conservative because I knew the last climb was really tough. It was a big group and I knew De Marchi was one of the stronger guys so I followed him and on the last climb I was able to get the gap and take the win. I didn’t quite get enough time to take the leaders jersey but I am delighted with the stage win.”

Maglia Rosa Alessandro De Marchi said: “With my way of racing, many attacks haven’t paid off in the past but I don’t think that I have made mistakes in the eleven years of my career. At the end of the day, it’s important to never give up. The Maglia Rosa is what all kids dream of. I never really thought I’d get it as I was never anywhere near close to it before. I don’t know exactly why but I started thinking about it two days ago and it happened today. I understood from the first few kilometers that it would be a big battle and not an easy breakaway of three or four riders. It was the right situation that could create opportunities and that’s how things went as planned. Beyond the Maglia Rosa, it’s even more gratifying to hear that many people are happy with what you have done.”
