With Spring around the corner and days starting to brighten up, new sunglasses are popping up left and right. Today, Scicon Sports announced their new Aeroshade Kunken. The new frame can be more subtle (well, as subtle as they can be), or a bit flashier with an interesting new lens finish.
The Aeroshade Kunken blends aspects of the Aeroshade XL and the Aerowing Lamon. The shape of the frame and lens follows the Aeroshade XL without the lower bumper on the lens, but also adds the side vents similar to the Aerowing Lamon.
First things first, we have to talk about that lens. Scicon added a monographed option that features their logo across the lens. It has a flashy, fashion-forward look, but from what we are told, you don’t see the logos from the inside. If that level of panache doesn’t quite match yours, you can opt for the standard lenses without the monograph.
Now that we got past that lens, here’s a little more about the Aeroshade Kunken.
Scicon uses a bio-based frame material made from vegetable oils that is durable, lightweight, and can withstand the harshest conditions. Handcrafted in Italy, the center of the frame features a Panorama Arch and Scicon’s Horizon Adapt nose bridge that adjusts up or down to customize your fit. Between the two, you can increase the top of your field of vision by 10% when riding in an aggressive position. Adjustable, flexible temple tips and nose pad provide a custom fit to keep them locked in place.
For the lens, Scicon uses the SCN-PP True Vision polycarbonate lens for impact protection and optical clarity. The cylindric base 6 lens helps to reduce distortion, and the mirror finishes reduce glare. The Active Ventilation System uses vents above the lens to provide unrestricted airflow to reduce fogging. Air dispersion gaps on the side of the lens, similar to the Aerowing Lamon, allow for additional ventilation.
The Aeroshade Kunken is available in a wide range of frame and lens combinations. Carbon Matte, Black Gloss, White Gloss, and Crystal Gloss frames are all available with Multimirror Red, Blue, Bronze, and Silver lenses, and include an extra clear lens for foul-weather days. Those frame colors are also available with Photochromoatic Silver lenses, or the Monogram Multimirror Red or Monogram Multimirror Silver lenses. There are also UAE Team editions that come with Black/White Stripe frames with special Monogram UAE Multimirror Red or Silver lenses. Retail prices start at $220/€190/£160/A$310/CA$280, with the Photochromatic and Monographed lenses a little more, and the UAE Team Emirates editions the most expensive.
Spare lenses are also available in Pink and Gradient Black, and there is an optional Yellow Gloss frame for the days you want to feel like Tadej Pogačar winning the Tour.
World Tour teams will be debuting the new glasses at the UAE Tour starting on February 20, though teams like UAE Team Emirates, BikeExchange Jayco, Israel Start Up Nation, and Team Astana Qazaqstan have been testing them since Il Lombardia in 2021.
