Filippo Ganna claimed his third time trial victory of the season at the opening stage of the 2022 Tirreno-Adriatico as he covered the 13.9km at an average speed of 54.5km/h, showing his strength most where he faced the headwind. The world champion outclassed all the other specialists whereas the fight for GC saw Remco Evenepoel, second, beating defending champion Tadej Pogacar, third, by 7 seconds. The Belgian took the white jersey of best young rider ahead of a highly awaited duel between the two prodigies of modern cycling.
“I pushed my team to line me up here today,” said Ganna in the press conference. “I was scheduled for Paris-Nice but Tirreno-Adriatico is the race I’ve always taken part in since I turned pro. It was hard at the beginning. It was the race I maybe hated the most because I suffered so much but I’ve learned to love it really. I did a very good ITT today. I took some risks and passed very close to the barriers at the U-turn. But I came out well. I’ll try to help my teammates as much as I can in the coming few days. I also want to finish this race in the right condition for Milano-Sanremo. This is only the beginning of the season and I don’t know where the legs will take me this week. I will try to help my teammates, Elia Viviani for the sprints, Richard Carapaz and Richie Porte for the GC.”
The Maglia Bianca Remco Evenepoel said: “Maybe I could have gone a bit faster but I got the maximum out of my legs so second is the best result I could get today. Tadej [Pogacar] also has a very good time trial, so I knew I could take a maximum of 10 or 15 seconds over him. He’s in a very good shape. I was really hoping to take the blue jersey today but the white jersey is also a nice one. We’ll see day by day when I’ll target the lead. Firstly, I’ll try to recover from this intense time trial. We’ll also try to go for some stage wins with Mark [Cavendish].”

A mixed-terrain stage, undulating particularly in its second part. A departure from Camaiore leads the riders across the Pisan plain to Volterra, touching on Pisa, Ponsacco and Lajatico. The group will then enter the surroundings of Siena, with a series of ups and downs of varying degrees of difficulty until the riders reach Colonna di Montarrenti where a circuit of sorts begins. The race will pass through Rosia and, after a short stretch on the ss.223, will climb the hill of La Pineta before passing through Monticiano and reaching the San Galgano plain. Another climb to Chiusdino follows and then a short climb (Frosini) back to Colonna di Montarrenti. The riders pass through Rosia once more to reach a flat finish.
