Jai Hindley (Bora-Hansgrohe) won stage 9 of the 2022 Giro d’Italia, the 191km-long Isernia-Blockhaus. Romain Bardet (Team DSM) and Richard Carapaz (Ineos Grenadiers) finished second and third, respectively.
Speaking seconds after the stage finish, the stage winner, Jai Hindley, said: “I wasn’t feeling well the whole climb so I just tried to survive. I knew it was flattening a bit in the last kilometres. I also knew I had to take the last curve in first place. Then I gave it all. I went through hard times last year so… winning here… I’m lost for words.”
Speaking in the press conference, Hindley added: “It’s been a while since I last got my hands up in the air. It’s nice to be back at that level. Last year wasn’t really the sweetest. I had quite a lot of illness and crashes. A year ago I had to pull out of the Giro with a saddle sore. So it’s pretty sweet to get the win today, especially here in the Abruzzo where I spent six months as an amateur, riding over Passo Lanciano many times. I wasn’t feeling explosive today; I rode my own tempo. Joao [Almeida] was probably in the same situation as me. When we came through, he was super strong, actually. I was suffering, just trying to survive. We’ve been lucky that they played cat-and-mouse at the front. We came with high ambitions as a team with three leaders. I wouldn’t write anyone off at this point of the Giro.”
Juan Pedro Lopez Perez (Trek-Segafredo) retains the Maglia Rosa.
The Maglia Rosa, Perez, said: “I want to say sorry to Sam Oomen because after we touched each other and I had to put one foot on the ground, I threw my bottle. When I came to my first Giro I didn’t expect to have the Maglia Rosa so it was hard to believe my soigneur who told me that I still have it. I’m very tired but luckily I have a rest day tomorrow.”
