Koen Bouwman (Jumbo-Visma) secured his second stage win in the 2022 Giro d’Italia as he triumphed in a sprint of the five breakaway riders at Santuario di Castelmonte in Friuli. He beat Mauro Schmid and Alessandro Tonelli to the line and mathematically securing the Maglia Azzurra ahead of the mythical Stage 20 to Marmolada. After several attacks in the group of the GC contenders, Richard Carapaz, Jai Hindley and Mikel Landa concluded the race maintaining the same time differences of 3 seconds and 1’05’’, in the overall standing.
Bouwman said in the press conference: “In the first category climb in Slovenia, I felt I could drop my breakaway companions but it was too far from the finish. The cooperation in the valley has been good. The final climb was made of steep parts and downs. I knew I had a better sprint than the others. I already had a stage victory so I could gamble a bit. At the end of the day, I’m just happy that I could finish it off. The victory is half mine and half thanks to the work done by Edoardo Affini along with riders from Groupama-FDJ and Quick-Step to keep the breakaway alive. I knew there was a corner at 150 metres, I didn’t know it was that tight. I had to brake and the other riders too. I’m a really honest rider. If I’d made a mistake, I would have said it. I deserve this victory.”
The Maglia Rosa, Richard Carapaz said: “At the end, I felt good today. It’s important ahead of tomorrow’s stage. I don’t think we’ll finish all three together tomorrow because the scenario should be different in a hard 5km uphill finale but in any case, I prefer to have an advantage of three seconds than no advantage at all. I’d like to win the stage tomorrow but it’s even more important to win the Giro. We’ve lost Richie Porte who felt bad at the beginning of the stage. He did his best but the rhythm was high. It’s a considerable loss but our team is still good and motivated for tomorrow.”

Tomorrow’s Stage – Stage 20, Belluno-Marmolada, 168KM
A colossal stage through the Dolomites, and the last summit finish of the 2022 Giro d’Italia. Starting in Belluno, and taking a short diversion across the valley of the Piave river through Sedico, Santa Giustina and Sospirolo, the route passes Agordo and Cencenighe, crossing the Val Cordevole upstream. The stage finale features three consecutive climbs, Passo di San Pellegrino (with gradients exceeding 15% past Falcade), Passo Pordoi (the 2022 Cima Coppi), and Passo Fedaia, where the gradients hover steadily above 10%, topping out at 18% in the 6km after Malga Ciapela.
The ramps are steep over the last 14km. After a technical ascent from Caprile to Rocca Pietore, the route becomes an ascending 2% false-flat. The gradients go up again past Sottoguda, then the road dips a little before Malga Ciapela (passing through a curved, well-lit tunnel). The average gradient over the final 6km is around 12%, with an 18% peak, mid-climb.
