Knog has been known for coming up with some innovative designs, like their Cobber lights and Oi bells. Now, they want to hide something on your bike to keep it safe and secure. The new Scout is part bike alarm and part finder, but won’t weigh you down to keep your bike safe.
The Scout mounts to one set of water bottle bosses on its own or under your bottle cage. If running it on its own, you can run it with a bright yellow cover to deter prospective bike thieves, or without to keep a stealthy look. The 1-ounce device packs a punch with an 85db alarm, that when armed, starts blasting if your bike is moved. It also sends you a text notification, along with using Apple’s Find My Network to find your bike if someone tries to ride off with it. It also comes with tamper-proof screws so a potential thief can’t ditch it.
“Scout has been in development for well over three years, which is a good indication of just how difficult it was to achieve the dual function of a bike alarm and finder in one specifically designed unit,” says Knog co-founder and designer Hugo Davidson. “We are now delighted with the final product, which has exceeded our already high expectations. We genuinely believe that Scout represents the future of bike security.”
If someone does run off with your bike, alarm blasting, all you have to do is to grab your iOS device and launch the Find My app. As your bike and Scout moves by other devices that pick up Bluetooth signals, a secure, private signal is detected and shared to the Find My app. You can find it on the map as you would other devices. Unfortunately for non-iOS users, Find My is not available for Android or Google, but the Scout still makes a heck of an alarm in a lightweight and unobtrusive package.
To use the Scout, just download the Knog app from the Apple App Store. You can use this to control other Bluetooth-enabled Knog devices, along with the Scout. The unit itself has multi-functional LEDs to help you easily see if the Scout is armed, paired, and also battery life.
Knog built the Scout to take on anything you will on a bike. It is waterproof and long-lasting with a battery life of about 6 months. When it is time to recharge, just connect the unit by USB-C to charge, and you are all set with no need to remove it from the bike. This means that it is a relatively set and forget an item, even when washing your bike or riding in extreme conditions.
At $59.95, the Scout is a lightweight addition to your bike that adds security in a small package. If it sounds like something you’d like to add to your bike, it will be available later this summer on their website and through dealers. We’ll have a sample arriving soon for review, so keep an eye out for that in the near future.
