Primoz Roglic triumphed in Tarvisio in the world championship for ski jumping with the Slovenian junior team in 2007 and did it again as a cyclist sixteen years later in the grand final of the 2023 Giro d’Italia. The top 3 riders on GC, Thomas, Roglic and Joao Almeida were timed within four seconds at the first time check at the end of the flat section. The Slovenian made the difference on the steepest sections despite a chain drop. The top 5 of stage 20 is the same as the general classification with Damiano Caruso settling for fourth and Thibaut Pinot climbing to fifth overall as well as being crowned the King of the Mountains of the Corsa Rosa.
If, as expected, Roglic makes it safely through the parade of Stage 21, he will become the first Slovenian to win the Giro. Until ten years ago, there wasn’t even a Slovenian stage winner. Luka Mezgec became the first one on the conclusive stage ten years ago, at Trieste, in the same region of Friuli that borders Slovenia as today.
Speaking in the press conference, the stage winner and new Maglia Rosa Primož Roglič said: “Five days after my second crash in the Giro, I still struggled a bit but I kept fighting. I still have some pain, but today I had the legs for winning and it went well. I made it thanks to this crowd. I’ll never forget the support of all these people. My chain dropped but I put it back on and it gave me a bit of a free rest. I had to restart. Obviously I had enough to keep it going and I was lucky enough that someone was there to push me because it was so steep. I had goose bumps and tears in my eyes when I saw all these people cheering for me. I didn’t care so much about the result. I’m incredibly proud to be the rider they came here for.”
