2024 Giro d’Italia: Stage 14 Results

  • Ron

Filippo Ganna powered to one more victory against the clock at the 2024 Giro d’Italia, something he’s been used to since 2020. He rode to the Garda Lake 29 seconds faster than Tadej Pogacar while his team-mate Thymen Arensman rounded out the stage podium with Geraint Thomas in fourth place. The Welshman overtook Colombian champion Dani Martinez on GC to start the queen stage wih a deficit of 3’41’’.

Speaking in the press conference, stage winner Ganna said: “Behind today’s victory, there’s so much work, especially as the difference is made by details. In the time trial to Perugia, I maintained my standard but today there wasn’t the hill of Perugia, however the boy in pink has made me suffer a lot, I have to thank him for pushing me to the level I had today. It looks easy, people say when there’s a time trial, Ganna wins, I wish! It would help me sleep better and be more relaxed but it’s not that easy. This win raises my morale before the last week of the Giro whereas the day after the Perugia time trial, I got dropped and I spent 60km in the grupetto. Today there were so many people on the road sides. They’ve given me an incredible support. It’s also thanks to them that I managed this little exploit. There were only 32km but I felt it was almost as long as Milano-Sanremo. I want to finish the Giro before thinking of the Olympic time trial”.

The Maglia Rosa Tadej Pogacar said: “Looking at Filippo Ganna’s time checks, he put a big towards the end whereas I tried to do the opposite. The first part suited me more. It was a very nice parcours. I enjoyed the beginning very much but on the second part, I just tried to maintain my power and to not kill myself. Off the bike also, I’m enjoying the atmosphere of the Giro a lot. Our morale is high. We keep ourselves motivated as a team. We’re very strong and we’re here for only one goal that everyone knows since December: to win the Giro. The final KO punch should be on Monte Grappa, which is the last brutal climb. In cycling, if you can take time like today, you do. Better be safe than sorry. Having a bigger gap before the mountains makes me more comfortable more confident”.
