After pronouncements last week that Stage 16 of the 2024 Giro d’Italia could possibly have been affected by ongoing weather conditions and snow pack, race organizers first decided to replace the climb over the Stelvio with the Giogo di Santa Maria/Umbrailpass at 2489 m.
When the day dawned with freezing rain and temperatures near 0, the peloton expressed further concern about the conditions. After some hand wringing, the stage was further modified today, starting instead from Lasa and running only 121km in length. What was due to be one of the toughest days due to the weather and the terrain will still have plenty of climbing in the last 35km, with the 23.3 km Passo Pinei and then the final Monte Pana climb (6.5km at 6.1%).
